Types of Handsaws and Their Uses

No matter how many power saws you have, sometimes you just have to have a handsaw. But not all handsaws are created alike.

Miter Saw Blade

There are different saws for different jobs. In this article, we're going to take a look at the various saws you will
find at your local hardware store or home center and their applications. But first, let's discuss saw teeth. There are
three things concerning saw teeth you need to learn about when considering types of handsaws to buy:

Miter Saw Blade

Shape. The shape of the teeth determines the saw's use. For example, crosscut teeth are designed for cutting against the grain while rip teeth are better suited for cutting along the grain. Set. The set is the teeth that are bent out from the rest of the saw. Size. This is the number of teeth per inch (TPI) or points per inch (PPI).

The shape, set and size of the tooth pattern will dictate for what purpose the handsaw is best suited. We're going to take a look at 7 different types of saws and their uses:

Coping Saw. Coping saws are similar to scroll saws. They're great for making curved cuts because of their thin blades and fine teeth. Frame Saw. Frame saws have been around for a while and haven't changed much. They're one of the most valuable saws in the workshop because of their versatility. The blades can be changed to ripsaws, crosscut saws and panel saws in moments. Ripsaw. The ripsaw has large, straight teeth at around 5 TPI. Ripsaws are used to cut along the grain, not across it like a crosscut saw. Backsaw. Backsaws are great for cutting dovetails because of their fine teeth (around 20 TPI). Japanese Saw. The blades of a Japanese saw are shaped differently than other saws. This is because Japanese saws are designed to cut on the backward stroke. Other handsaws cut on the forward stroke. Crosscut Saw. These saws have very fine, very sharp teeth that are great for cutting across the grain. The teeth are around 8 TPI. Panel Saw. Panel saws are designed for cutting plywood. It's similar to a crosscut saw but with finer teeth.

Now you have a general idea about the types of handsaws and their uses. It's a good idea to keep several different
handsaws in your workshop. Because of the noise factor, this is especially apropos if your workshop is in an apartment or uninsulated garage. Handsaws are relatively inexpensive and, if properly taken care of, can last for many years.

Produces Smooth, Quiet Cuts with Laser-Cut Kerf
The Freud D1280X's clean-cutting design means that you can enjoy the comfort of smooth performance. The thin 0.118-inch kerf between the blade's 80 Hi-ATB (alternate-top bevel) teeth is laser cut to provide ease of feed, so you have more control over the blade's position. This helps maximize both the accuracy of the cut and the efficiency of your work, so you enjoy a job well done and the ability to complete more tasks in less time.

An added bonus, the blade's laser-cut stabilizer vents reduce noise and vibration during operation, keeping your work environment more relaxed and your hands more in control. This feature also reduces friction and warping, helping to extend the blade's cutting life.

Features Shock-Resistant Carbide for Long-Lasting Precision
So you can count on it over the long term, the Freud D1280X is designed for durability. The blade's hardy teeth are protected by Freud's exclusive shock-resistant TiCo Hi-Density Carbide formula, which helps fight wear and tear and maintains blade sharpness up to four times longer than standard carbide. And protecting the blade is Perma-Shield Non-Stick Coating that provides resistance to heat and corrosion.
