#1. Check to see that the fuel line is switched on. This is an easy one to forget at the beginning of the season, because several months may have passed since you last used it. In addition, you want to ensure you have enough gas for the engine to fire. That's another easy one to forget the first time you bring your mower back out.

#2. If your lawn mower has enough gas (at least half a tank) and the fuel line is switched on, the next thing you can check is to see that your fuel line is clear and enough gas is getting to the carburetor.

#3. While you're checking your gas, you may want to think back and try to recall if you had added a fuel stabilizer to it at the end of last season. If not, replace the gas.

#4. A dirty or faulty spark plug is a common culprit of lawn mower problems. Your machine's spark plug should be dry and dirt free.

#5. Dirty air filters can also hamper the equipment's function. Before you replace your filter, you can shake it out to get rid of dust and dirt. However if the air filter looks oily and has a lot of caked on dirt you need to replace it.

#6. If you are finding your machine is leaving a ragged edge on your grass, it probably means that the blade needs to be sharpened. A dull blade will not only leave your lawn looking uneven, but it can also damage your grass.

#7. Clean your blades often. It's a good idea to clean grass and dirt off your blade after each mow. That goes for the rest of your equipment, too.

#8. Check your engine oil. The same way your car's oil needs to be clean and properly topped up, so does your lawn mower's oil. The oil provides a vital function in lubricating your engine parts, so replace it frequently to avoid damaging the engine.

Those are the most common problems that people face. Checking each one of these items when your equipment is malfunctioning can save you costly repair bills. In addition, you want to make sure you follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines carefully. Each one will have different specifications, so have a read over the owner's manual before attempting any repairs on your own.

Every once in a while a manufacturer will come up with a real engineering innovation. Bosch, a company with a strong reputation for ingenious design have done it again with the Bosch GCM12SD 12 Inch Axial Glide Dual Bevel Miter Saw. All sliding miter saws have a major weakness-the rails on which the motor and blade assembly is mounted. The rails are vulnerable to damage, wear and exposure to sawdust and resins. Recalibration is a chore and accuracy and consistency can be a problem. Aside from these flaws rails also take up a lot of space at the back of the saw. So to accommodate a sliding miter saw you need extra space available at the back of the saw. In the workshop, material supports also have to be installed away from the wall too. This wastes a massive amount of valuable space.

Why is the Bosch Axial Glide So Much Better Than Sliding Miter Saws?

1.Space Saving

Bosch have removed the slide rails completely and replaced them with a hinged arm. This extends to move forward and folds to move backwards. At no point does it protrude from the back of the machine, allowing the saw to be placed within an inch of a back wall. As you can imagine this allows the Bosch Axial Glide Miter Saw to be set up in places where previously it was impossible to fit a sliding miter saw. For example an alcove,cupboard or narrow hallway. In the workshop space savings can be truly liberating.

2.Durable

The Bosch looks very different from what you'd expect of a miter saw. The axial-glide system is actually two arms,set opposed 90 degrees to one other. They are coupled together and work in unison as a single unit. The hinged joints supported by 12 ball bearings and the entire arm is designed for heavy duty operation, and cast from aluminum. Such a design is not entirely new and similar setups have been used in suspension systems where durability is needed. The precision,sealed ball bearings won't stick or get gummed up like a rail and will suffer far less wear and tear.

3.Accurate

The opposing arms and precision bearings means there virtually no play in the axial glide arm as the saw makes a cut. Even when making compound cuts the blade always stays central in the kerf and movement is consistent and accurate every time.

4.Smooth

No other saw feels like this one. In use it moves with liquid smoothness without hardly any effort from the user. Conventional sliding saws seem gritty and uneven after this. This big 15 amp motor helps here too and nothing I cut ever slowed it down. Some users prefer a bit more "feel". To this end bosch have included a damper to increase resistance.

5. Extended Capacity

It's a pleasant surprize that the Bosch GCM12SD actually has a greater cutting capacity than the previous 12-inch model from Bosch. It increases horizontal cutting capacity by 2 inches, now a huge 14 inches. Vertical capacities are slightly increased too.

Woodworking Safety Part II - Essential Woodshop Safety Supplies

Part I of this series covered safety attire that should be worn or available for use in a woodshop. In Part II, we cover some essential safety precautions to help prevent injury or provide first aid should an accident occur in the woodshop.

-Fully stocked first aid kit. A first aid kit should be available and accessible in the woodshop at all times. Even a small accident such as a minor cut should be treated right away to prevent further injury or infection.

-A working fire extinguisher. Like all electrical devices, electrical power tools pose a fire risk. The risk is increased with power tools due to the possibility of mistakenly sawing through a cord. Know where fire extinguishers are located in the woodshop and how to use them.

-Operator manuals for all hand and power tools in the shop. Different tools require specific safety precautions advised by the manufacturer. Adhering to all manufacturer recommendations for handling a tool and wearing the recommended protective gear during its use will contribute to a safer woodshop environment.

-Broom, hand brush and other cleaning supplies. Keeping a woodshop clean and free of excessive sawdust promotes a safe environment and prevents unnecessary injuries. An accumulation of sawdust and other wood scraps can increase the danger in the event of a fire. Sawdust and wood scraps should be cleaned regularly with a broom or hand brush, not compressed air which can get dust into the eyes.

Rags and brushes that have been used with these substances should be treated with the same caution. Keeping flammable materials away from power tools will help reduce the risk of fire in the woodshop.

-Personal safety attire and gear. An adequate supply of safety goggles, hearing protection, work gloves, dust masks and respirators should be kept on hand in every woodshop.
