Miter Saw - Information and Answers

My experiences with woodwork projects over many years have left me with a bounty of information and ideas that I would like to share. In particular, I have been using a miter saw for many years and the most frustrating and time consuming experience I initially encountered was choosing the right saw for my needs. After wearing out a few manual miter saws, I finally decided to upgrade to a power saw and ended up with a compound miter saw. The miter saw I chose has proven to be one of the most useful tools in my workshop.

Miter Saw Blade

I'm sure others are finding it difficult searching for a source of trusted information on miter saws and have many unanswered questions. Like me, they have encountered lots of reviews that simply promote specific brands. Initially, the only useful information I found was in-store demonstrations, and I only caught 1 or 2 of those. When I did find the time to spend at a demonstration, I discovered a wealth of information, and I could get my questions answered. However, I couldn't just walk into a store at any time to attend a live demonstration. I actually spent hours learning, in my workshop, from trial and error, how to properly set up the power equipment. So, I made many mistakes. It's no wonder my wife got the idea that any project I undertook would take ages for me to complete. I started searching for time saving solutions online.

Miter Saw Blade

I now save heaps of time by planning a project from scratch. I sometimes need a refresher on techniques, but I just look up a video or do a quick search of my trusted sites and get all I need. There is a lot of information available but its the useful information that I look for, and if I don't know an answer, I can easily find it. I now generally know when I will finish a project. Rather than spending many late nights in the workshop, I can now take my wife to dinner without feeling guilty that I haven't completed a project.

When deciding on the right saw, I was advised to consider the saw blade. Tungsten tipped blades will last longest before needing re-sharpening, but they are expensive. While it is best to use blades at least 10 inch diameter, if you also have other circular saws then make sure the blades are interchangeable so you will not be buying multiple blades of the same size.

I discovered a great deal of useful information on miter saw usage, accessories and safety. There is so much information out there, I have found it more efficient to follow a tried and proven path rather than experimenting with different ideas. If you have a question, I'm sure the answer is readily at hand.

Mitre Saws - The Craftsman's Friend

For many years, craftsmen and others who took on woodworking projects used the mitre box, generally a wooden box with slots pre-cut at certain angles. This allowed the user to insert the mitre saw to cut 45-degree angles, 90-degree angles or one of several other corner angles necessary. The manual process using the mitre box helped prepare picture frames, wall and corner mouldings, trim and much more. This tried-and-true method is still used by those who employ mitre saws on a daily basis.

Miter Saw Blade

Others, however, have chosen to employ new technology and power, even with such basic concepts as mitre angles and corners. Power saws provide a very clean, quick cut that is sometimes preferable to the cut made by a hand saw. As craftsmen, carpenters and others adopted power tools over the past few decades, the mitre saw and other table saws with angle settings, have become very popular.

Miter Saw Blade

A saw on a mitre saw stand is one way to employ power and newer technology for those special angle cuts. A radial saw also allows the user to adjust the cut angle, using a guide that is adjustable by single degrees. Most of these newer saws have standard "stops" at 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. With a select piece of lumber against the guiding "fence" the cut will match the angle selected almost perfectly.

But there is more to the mitre saw concept than this. In recent years, adjustable saws and special blades have made it possible to cut quickly and smoothly when installing table tops, counter tops and assorted furniture items. Some have taken quite quickly to the compound mitre saw for counter and table work, because they can get a nice bevelled edge (making sharp corners nearly a thing of the past). New saws provide more gradual angles that, with a little sanding, can be very, very smooth.

Radial arm saws make it possible to achieve a perfect, custom cut with minimal passes of the blade at various angles. For example, the Dewalt radial arm saw was very popular in the United States for years. However, the company stopped production on this particular equipment more than two decades ago. Yet, some craftsmen still employ this standard machinery in their workshops.

For those requiring something that will produce special projects, the panel saw can be an ideal addition to the workshop. This particular saw is most often used for cutting large panels or sheets of wood into varying sizes for cabinet-making. The mitre saw is generally employed after this to shape the front of the cabinet or a drawer face, for example. The better hardwoods used for the cabinet doors, drawer faces and other decorative outer pieces must usually be cut with a good mitre saw so that good bevelled edges complete the decorative front.

A number of different types of saws can be employed in the well-equipped workshop, ranging from the basic mitre saw/box version, to the more complex table saws and radial arm saws. It's a matter of choice and work comfort.

Dewalt 718 Miter Chop Saw Review

The Dewalt 718 is one of the superb range of miter saws that the company manufactures. I have used the dewalt 718 and its forerunners for about 20 years and find it ideal for all sorts of cutting jobs in my workshop. The first one I bought in 1989 was used daily for 10 years in a busy commercial setting making around 50 - 100 cuts per day. It was stolen from my workshop which meant that work had to stop while we got a replacement. One week later the new one arrived with a number of improvements over the old one.

Miter Saw Blade

Constant Product Improvements On Dewalt Miter Saws

Miter Saw Blade

The improvements included the fantastic guarding system that covers the blade. As you make a cut the guard reveals just enough of the blade to make the cut without exposing the operator to the saw blade. Another development was the addition of quick clamps to hold your work in place while you make the cut.

We do not always use these clamps but they are very solid. Just can clamp and unclamp your work in about 5 seconds using the ratchet system inherent in the 2 clamps. As many of the profiles we cut are non square we use jigs with the clamps to hold the work securely.

Eventually my second Dewalt 718 stopped working. We had run it into the ground over 11 years and the motor bearings were beginning to wear out. Dewalt did offer to change the motor but I decided to buy a brand new one.

New Features On The Latest Dewalt 718 Miter Saw

We have now had the latest version of the DW718 for about 6 months. Again there is the guarding system which has been further improved. The clamp system is the same. The best new feature is the laser cutting guide. It shines directly onto your work and the beam is the exact width of the blade. So you can see both sides of the cut.

This is critical when you are working to very tight tolerances. If A piece of Aluminium has to be 1789mm then the laser beam allows me to hit that measurement exactly.

The other main improvement is the start up speed of the blade. It quickly gets to full speed when you press the on switch. About half the time of the previous model. There is also a brake on the blade which means that it stops turning very quickly. You no longer feel you are waiting for the blade to stop. It just starts and stops very fast.

Most of my work is with aluminium and wood. These need completely different Dewalt saw blades. You cannot use a wood saw blade on aluminium without causing damage to the blade. You will also find the work catches in the blade which is quite dangerous. An aluminium saw blade will cut wood but the teeth will go blunt much quicker. This is particularly true for cutting laminates and chipboard.

The Freud Difference
Freud manufactures some of the most innovative, technologically advanced saw blades in the world. To ensure that the highest quality products meet the toughest design standards, Freud owns and operates six manufacturing facilities in Western Europe. Freud is one of the few manufacturers of woodworking tools in the world that produces its own MicroGrain carbide with titanium, called TiCo -- a combination of titanium and cobalt. Freud develops different types of carbide for each application to maximize the cutting life and performance of the tool; and Freud also operates one of the most modern product development research centers in Europe. By overseeing the entire manufacturing process from start to finish, Freud guarantees some of the highest quality, most advanced products in the industry.

About Freud Industrial Blades
Freud’s industrial series blades were designed for the serious woodworker. Available in a variety of styles for different applications, LU blades feature thick carbide tips, precision-tensioned bodies found in every Freud quality blade. Some LU blades include a red Teflon coating that helps reduce friction, heat build-up, and gumming -- which prolongs the life of the blade.

About this Thin Kerf Crosscutting Saw Blade
This blade gives new life to underpowered saws and produces smooth crosscuts in hardwoods, softwoods and moldings. Coated blades pull 1/3 less on the saw, which translates into 33-percent more cutting power. This thin kerf blade removes less material than standard carbide blades, thus requiring less horsepower to produce equally good results. The "fusion" tooth design gives glass smooth side finishes as well as a chip-free top and bottom during both ripping and crosscutting applications. Perma-Shield permanent non-stick coating reduces friction, protecting this thin kerf saw blade against corrosion, gumming and pitch build-up. With laser-cut construction made from high-strength steel, this blade is built for long life and precision. Pre-tensioning assures that the blade will remain flat through the shocks from cutting and stresses from turning at high speeds, and its anti-vibration reed design eliminates all vibration and produces the cleanest cuts possible, making the use of a stabilizer unnecessary.

Applications
This exceptional blade rips and crosscuts wood, chip board, plywood, and laminate -- but it is not recommended for ferrous metals or masonry. This blade is ideal for crosscutting with a fine finish, while using an underpowered saw.

Warranty
This blade is covered by Freud's limited lifetime warranty.

Sliding Miter Saw - Choosing Between a 12 Inch and 10 Inch Model

When a sliding miter saw is required there are many choices ranging from 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches. The 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 inch models are generally purchased for very specific work by a tradesman and are not used as general purpose machines due to their size. The real battle arises when the choice has to be made between the 10 inch and the 12 inch models. These two sizes are the stars of the sliding miter saw market and manufacturers pull all the stops to advertise these particular models. So if we are going to buy, we have to choose between the more attractively priced 10 inch model and the more expensive 12 inch model.

Miter Saw Blade

In general manufacturers include the bells and whistles on both their 10 inch and 12 inch models, therefore the choice comes down to some very basic factors which we will analyze.

Miter Saw Blade

The terms 10 inch and 12 inch refer to the diameter of the saw blade in the machine. A sliding miter saw has a distinct advantage over their less glamorous family the non-sliding model in that sliding saws have a much wider crosscut length.

A saw with a 12 inch blade has the ability to cut thicker pieces compared to the 10 inch model. For the tradesman who has to dimension thick pieces, the extra 2 inches on the blade makes the 12 inch model indispensable on the work site.

Conversely for the majority of handymen and weekend warriors, a 10 inch saw will complete just about all the projects they will experience such as dimensioning 2x4's for framing, large picture frame molding, crown molding and weekend decking jobs. The extra 0 for a 12 inch sliding miter saw is hard to justify especially for the handymen and weekend warriors.

When deciding which model sliding miter saw to acquire one must also consider the weight of the tool. A 12 inch sliding miter saw is quite heavy compared to a 10 inch and if the tool has to be frequently moved it can be quite frustrating and hazardous moving a tool from point to point on a work site. The blade size also adds an increased replacement cost as 12 inch blades are more expensive and even when having the blade re-sharpened the extra teeth on the 12 inch blade are an additional cost.

It is good to remember that even if a job comes along suited more along the lines of a 12 inch saw, most of us have a portable table saw which can also do crosscuts with a suitable jig. A cross cut jig for a table saw is very easy to construct within 15 minutes and this solution frees up extra cash for the purchase of other more critical tools.

In the final analysis a 10 inch sliding miter saw will be sufficient to satisfy the needs of the weekend warrior and the handyman. The advanced tradesman however will need to consider the 12 inch sliding miter as a viable addition to his tool kit, even though he may already own a 10 inch model, based purely on the increased volume of work he has to do on a daily basis and the sizes of stock that may be involved.
